Why SA tech businesses need cyber cover
South African tech companies handle customer data every day. Under POPIA, a breach can mean regulator penalties, mandatory notification costs, and civil claims from affected data subjects. Cyber insurance absorbs those costs so a single incident does not sink the business.
What a strong cyber policy includes
The cover you want in your policy schedule, at limits that match your business:
- Breach response — forensics, legal, PR, notification.
- Ransomware — negotiation, restoration, ransom payment where legal.
- Business interruption from a cyber event with a 12+ month indemnity.
- Regulatory defence and POPIA penalty top-ups where insurable.
- Third-party liability for data-subject claims.
- Social-engineering fraud (invoice redirection).
What to check before signing
The differences between mediocre and excellent cyber cover show up in the exclusions. Ask:
- Is remote work and BYOD explicitly covered?
- Is the ransomware sub-limit at least R5M?
- Are cloud-provider outages included?
- Is retroactive cover included for undiscovered incidents?
